Menopause is a stage which stops of the monthly female reproductive cycles, and in humans this is usually indicated by a permanent absence of monthly periods. Menopause brings with it a number of changes to a woman; it is the end of the possibility of bearing children, but the beginning of a whole new part of your life. If you have taken good care of yourself in the years prior to menopause this will pay dividends for you now as your body will maintain stronger bones and muscles to keep your health up during these middle years of your life.
During menopause you are very likely to gain weight, regardless of whether or not you have carefully managed your weight before. This is a natural part of this step of your life as your body decreases its need for calorie intake. That way, you can concentrate less on counting calories, and instead enjoy varied, tasty, good-for-you foods.
In order to effectively prevent menopause weight gain, focus on maintaining your muscle mass. Every year after their thirties, women can lose about one-third of a pound of muscle. Your body is able to metabolize the food you put in it better when you increase your muscle mass. By doing this, it will help you maintain a healthy weight.
As an added bonus, regular exercise can boost your mood and relieve stress, two things that are especially helpful during and after menopause. Studies have shown that stress may be linked to menopause weight gain, and this effect may be amplified in post-menopausal women. Keeping healthy with regular exercise can calm the stress while burning excess calories.
Although you might not want to gain five to ten extra pounds, it might actually be beneficial to your health if you are a menopausal woman. As long as you are still within the recommended weight range for your size, that few extra pounds may reduce some of the symptoms associated with the hormonal changes your body is undergoing. While it is never a good idea to eat unhealthy and become obese, menopause might be a good time to take a break from your diet and just enjoy being yourself.
