When talking about jewellery, references to earrings are almost indispensable. As common as rings, bracelets or necklaces, earrings have a relatively more intricate history. Nowadays, both males and females wear it according to their taste. However, what is it about this piece of jewellery that makes it so popular, irrespective of gender, social class, race, or religion? What is the secret of its power of breaking all types of boundaries?

Earrings in modern times are an ornament attachable to virtually any part of the body. Traditionally, at least in the western culture – it was supposed to ornate the earlobe, but, then again, at its origin, the earring was not confined to that use, that is, it had not a simple decorative purpose. For instance, people used to pierce their ears and wear earrings with a magic or religious motivation, meaning that they believed their gesture would protect them from evil or some demons. Sailors and pirates, it is said, did the same, but with a different intention. They thought it would sharpen their sight or improve the ability to hear.

As a symbol, this piece of jewellery changed its implications according to times and places. In early ages the fact that men wore it was everything but outrageous, about the twentieth century a man who had the audacity to pierce his earlobe in order to wear an earring was everything but reasonable. He was immediately stereotypeed of being homosexual, bisexual, and effeminate at best.

Second, there is an incredible variety of types of earrings. Among those that can be removed, we should note that there is, also, a permanent type of earring, which has a sexual or a more radical meaning, one can count: needles, dangles, studs, hoops, strings or slaves, or even the clip-on earring that needs no piercing in order to be worn. Linked to all these types, another aspect enhances the popularity of earrings, which is the large range of materials used in its production. Starting from precious metals such as gold or stones such as diamonds, up to silver, copper, glass or plastic, this jewel has a tremendous capacity to attract anyone, fitting any kind of budget.

Apart from these facets, common to many other types of jewellery the most interesting qualities of the earrings are that they can be attached to any part of the body: nose, eyebrows, lips, tongue, nipples, and genitals. Knowing that a person has a more sensitive part of the body pierced, especially if the earrings are not visible, may render that person as an eccentric, more interesting one and why not, more appealing.

Contemporary piercing ordinarily proceeds in hygienic and medical circumstances, attempting to elude infections or whatever undesirable side effects. However, there will always be entourages or groups the members of which are bold enough to operate the piercing themselves. In that case, the whole process has an initiation facet, and the earring itself stands as a manifesto of sharing the group’s views, opinions, and style. Usually the body decoration, as these entourages conceive it, involves, apart from body piercing, tattoos, a particular outfit, a specific haircut style and makeup if necessary.
