Gynecomastia is a medical term that originates from the Greek words for "women-like breasts.".This condition is far more common than many realize. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of the male population. The development of gynecomastia symptoms occur for a variety of reasons including obesity, hormonal imbalance, the use of several types of steroidal or estrogen-containing drugs, failure of the liver, and genetic causes. Marijuana use is also thought by some to be a possible cause; however, published data is contradictory. In other cases the appearance of gynecomastia is simply the side effect of a more important cause. For exemple the Medications used in the treatment of prostate cancer , such as antiandrogens and GnRH analogs can cause gynecomastia.
Although this condition is becoming more and more common amongst men of all ages, there is no "formal cure" for it. And that's the problem.
Note: Generally, sixty percent of boys at the age of puberty will show symptoms of pubertal gynecomastia. When gynecomastia is a result of pubertal development, it will most likely resolve itself within a year or two, requiring no medical treatment.
