Polythene is a tough, translucent and waxy thermoplastic. It softens on repeated heating. It is used in the packaging of bottles, toys, wood preservations, pipes and tubes. Polythene was introduced in the 1930's. Polythene is not degradable. Its use proves harmful to nature. It is recommended that the use of polythene should be done by recycling.
The use of polythene should be restricted to packing and that also only for those products which cannot be packed with paper and other degradable products. The manufacturers of polythene products should come up with better mechanism to collect waste polythene. This waste should then be directed to recycling. It is necessary to avoid accumulation of polythene waste for environment issues. Lesser and wider use of polythene should be implemented. Polythene is used in flexible packaging. The material can be made into the thinnest of layers and then used to package goods. They are water proof and wont let water enter. This will help in better packaging. Polythene is used to make bottles, garbage bags, caps of glass bottles and toys. They are used in inject molding. This process is where pellets of polythene are used which later cool and harden. Polythene has a number of uses. They are commonly used in our every day life. We use it in shopping bag, cola bottle and packaging material. Most of the time, these are discarded and thrown away. Polythene is not degradable. It will remain as it is and stay in the soil. Burning of polythene is also not advisable. Many people discard polythene by burning it. The fumes released while burning polythene are very harmful for humans. Care should be taken that they are not burnt.
It is very important that polythene used should be disposed of properly. Polythene can be recycled and used again. Care should be taken that is should not be disposed of in the open. The soil in which there is too much polythene waste will become infertile. Cattle can eat this polythene and get ill. Polythene getting burnt with other garbage is injurious as the fumes are harmful. The use of polythene should be minimal. This can be done by using other eco-friendly alternatives like cloth or recycled paper. They should be separated from other waste while disposing. Polythene should be recycled. The recycling process must be done efficiently, so that recycled polythene becomes safe for use.
