PST or Personal Storage Files is the extension of Microsoft Outlook files. These files are used to store Outlook data on the local hard drive of your computer. These personal data included mails, calendar, notes, schedule and contacts. These files are called PST as these are saved locally with .PST file name extension.

PST file are very useful as the store all the Outlook data. In order to access your Outlook data, you need to convert them in PST from OST (offline storage files stored on server). These files are very fast to communicate and take less space to store.

There is a drawback with PST file in Outlook 2002 and earlier versions that you can’t store PST files more than 2 GB. In later versions, this issue has fixed, but the performance of Outlook will decrease if the size of PST files will grow. In these cases, Outlook users have an alternative to compress the PST files. PST file compression is helpful in saving the disk space and making the communication and mail transfer easier. It is very important to compress the PST files with large size when you are sending them as an attachment.

In spite of giving benefits, sometimes PST file compression can lead to problems. It can corrupt your Outlook PST files.

The PST file corruption due to compression generally occurs due to two reasons:

1. Halting the process of data compression
2. Editing the compressed PST files
If any of these situations take place, your PST files can corrupt and can become inaccessible. In these situations, you need to repair the corrupted Outlook PST files.

It is very critical situation of file corruption as you can’t repair these files using inbuilt PST repair tools like ScanPST.exe. But there is no need to worry about your Outlook PST files.
