When you start your Mac computer, you may see a blinking question mark on its startup screen. This blinking question mark appears when your Mac can’t find the valid System Folder required for system initialization.

Generally this problem is caused due to the corrupted or damaged disk drivers on your Mac hard drive. This problem may also occur after installing the system updates or muddling with disk formatting tools. Sometimes the disk driver may get corrupted without any apparent reason.

If the question mark blinks only for half a minute and after that the system starts up normally, you can fix it by going to Startup Disk -> Control Panel -> selecting your hard drive.

In case if it blinks for a long time then you need to fix it using Apple HD SC Setup program. Boot your system with this CD. If it refuses to boot from it, you should force it.

If this procedure also doesn’t work, then you need to reinstall the operating system. As you know, reinstalling the operating system is never safe because it requires to format the primary partition of the drive on which you are going to install the operating system.

In this situation, you may loss your important data stored on the primary partition of your hard drive. In case if you haven’t partitioned your hard drive and you have stored all of your data on primary partition, it may become a serious problem and can put you in fix.
