Retired parents living comfortably on their social security check might be in for a big surprise if the recession gets much worse. One or two of their children might be out of a job and need money to survive until they can find one. Many parents will pay the rent and food bills until the economy returns to normal. If you can help them it is still your responsibility to do so, but if you don’t have the money, they might have to come home and live with you. A person returning home after so many years away is sure to be severely depressed. It would be your duty as a parent to make them feel welcome.

It is common for a parent to take in their child after college. They need time to find a job and get their own place to live. But it is much different if your child is now past forty and out of work. It is difficult for a person that age to be hired when so many younger people are looking for the same job. Most parents will let their son or daughter return to the room they grew up in hoping that one day they will find work. But many parents are struggling to support themselves, they unfortunately are not in the position to help. They will have to let their child go to a shelter for the homeless until they get someone that will hire them.

Homeless shelters are now occupied basically by Non-whites. But if a major recession hit the country, whites will make up the majority of the homeless. Many will pour into the retirement homes where their parents are now living and beg for refuge. The rest will search for distant relatives or childhood friends in order to stay out of a shelter. Those with young children will have to carry an almost overwhelming burden.

I only hope that our economy will improve and parents won’t have to deal with the problem of a returning son or daughter. But if more people start losing their jobs many will not be able to afford the high rent that they are now paying. They will have no choice except to call up their parents and ask for their old room back. Millions of others without a job or without any money or parents to help them, will have to scratch for survival.
