Whether you hand them out, post them to your target audiences, or even put them directly to your clients’ mailboxes and door slats – however which way you distribute them, your advertising flyers do get the word out on your products and services.

And whether you print them on a letter-sized paper or a half-sized paper stock, your advertising flyers are one of the least expensive marketing tool, not to mention that it is also the simplest and easiest marketing material to produce. In fact, you can either do it yourself if you don’t want to hire a professional flyer printing firm to create your marketing campaign for you.

But before you start doing your own flyers, you need to understand that you have to go back to the basics if you want to create something that sells. And here’s a reiteration of the basic principles of creating flyers that work the hardest in your marketing arsenal:

Good design in your print ad is never too complicated. As flyers can be made even if you don’t hire a flyer printing company, the design and layout need not be so complicated that it would be better for you to just get someone else to produce your design for you. Your flyer applies simple fonts that you can use throughout your ad. You can even get your clipart and images from a software collection, or better yet import one online sometimes for free or for most of the time for a minimal fee.

Graphics is not merely for aesthetic purposes. More than providing that excellent visual appearance in your ad, your illustrations can attract attention and pique the interest of your target clients. Your graphics should be able to draw your readers’ attention to your message, so much so that your pictures provide the extra oomph that your words need to make your readers keep you.

Use images and photos to tell your story. Graphic images are powerful elements that they can actually tell your story even if you don’t say it in words. Draw your readers to your message with your photographs and you’ll likely to appeal to them on a visual level.

Don’t overdo it. Especially those who are new to this type of project, people tend to go overboard with the design and concept of the ad. Avoid doing too much of everything – big size, large fonts, too many pictures – it’ll only make your ad look cluttered and messy. Stick to two fonts and their families to decrease the incident of confusion among your readers. Always remember that your graphics should always emphasize your message, instead of getting your readers distracted.
