Roofing work is expensive and important to your home’s value and your own comfort. Choosing the right contractor can mean an attractive roof, a comfortable home, and even a better home value. The wrong professional can leave you with a huge bill, incomplete work, and even leaks or falling roofing. When choosing a roofing contractor, it is important that you:

1) Double-check that a roofing professional has a tax identification number, permanent place of business, telephone number, and occupational license. If someone claiming to be a contractor does not have these things readily available, he or she may not be qualified to fix your roof and may be ready to move soon – not something you are looking for in a professional.

2) Check a contractor’s reputation. Your contractor should be able to put you in touch with previous clients happy with their work and should be able to show you completed projects. Call past clients and the Better Business Bureau in your area to make sure that the contractor completes roofing work as promised.

3) Ask to see the contractor’s proof of insurance (both liability coverage and workers’ compensation certification). Also, ask to see evidence that the contractor is licensed and bonded. If your contractor does not have these items, you could face a legal headache if anything goes wrong. Any roofing professional should be able to provide this information easily.

4) Ask to see the manufacturer’s warranty. Most roofing work includes some form of material – such as tiles, for example. These items come with warranties. Check the warranties and find out what is and is not covered by them. Also, ask the contractor whether they provide any warranties for labor.

5) Work out a written proposal and contract. Look over these documents carefully and even have an attorney glance at them, if you wish. You want to ensure that the roofing work will be completed in a reasonable manner.

6) Speak with the contractor before he or she does any actual work on your home. A good contractor will be able to answer your questions knowledgably and will be willing to listen to your questions and concerns. Be wary of the contractor eager to sell you the latest roofing technology but unwilling to answer your questions. Avoid working with contractors who do not listen to your needs and with contractors who try to pressure you into buying services or products you do not need.
