Electricity utility EDF Energy Networks has announced that it is investing approximately GBP360,000 in a project that will see the removal of two separate overhead power lines at the scheduled monument site of St Benet's Abbey, near Ludham, England.
The project got the go-ahead in the county, after being put forward to the regional steering group by the Broads Authority. Work will include the removal of approximately 3.3km of overhead electricity cable from land in the vicinity of St Benet's Abbey. Engineers will install replacement underground cables before deactivating the overhead network and removing the power lines, together with 42 wooden support poles.
The work will be funded from a special allowance granted to EDF Energy Networks by the industry regulator Ofgem, enabling it to remove overhead power lines from designated areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and national parks. Nigel Collier, EDF Energy Networks's protected area project officer, said: "EDF Energy has brought together environmental experts from every AONB and national park in the south east and east of England to ensure that the funding we have will have maximum impact on the regions' most beautiful landscapes. We are proud to provide the technical expertise required to bring this latest Broads Authority project to fruition."
