Spanish utility Iberdrola has announced that it has inspected over 50,000 kilometers of power lines across Spain to ensure supply security during the winter as part of its service quality improvement program.
The company said that it had inspected 9,300km of very high voltage, 5,500km of high voltage, and 32,000km of medium voltage lines, focusing on those with the greatest risk of damage. Iberdrola also noted that it examined another 3,300km using infrared technology and spent E9 million on pruning trees near power lines.
The utility had set a task of reducing service interruption times by 20% in the 2008-10 period, while replacing power meters and building 220kV installations for power transmission in cities. It also plans to increase regasification capacity for imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) at its Bilbao and Sagunto plants and also expand its gas distribution network. Iberdrola stated that it intends to invest E2 billion on its transmission facilities for the stringing of an additional 5,800km of power lines and the building and upgrade of more than 70 substations provided it receives the necessary regulatory approval.
