The National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) announced on 21 December that the tariffs for electricity and natural gas will stay the same after 1 January 2008, too. According to the ANRE announcement, there was no final decision taken on a possible increase in the price of the natural gas from 1 January 2008.
"Following the analysis made by the relevant department with the ANRE, there resulted the price of the natural gas should be significantly increased. In this context, ANRE decided to continue discussions with the operators in the system so as to identify and implement such solutions to have the impact of the price increase in the natural gas from import and of the adjustment of the distribution costs diminished. Thus, following this decision, the natural gas tariffs will stay unchanged after 1 January 2008, at least for a while. A final decision is to be taken after the completion of the talks, most probably in January, next year," the announcement says.
ANRE has already been carrying intense negotiations for some time with the operators on the market, who stated they were not able to deal with the increased price in the natural gas from the import. In terms of electricity, ANRE justified its decision to freeze the price by using an increased amount of cheap energy from Nuclearelectrica. The company has already switched on the Unit 2 of the Nuclear Power Plant based in Cernavoda (southeastern Romania) to supply 9 per cent of the total consumption of Romania.
