German utility RWE has announced changes in its senior management as part of its efforts to reorganize the company's functioning structure. The utility is centralizing group functions in a bid to maintain focus on sustainable growth. The reorganization will assign additional tasks to the departments involved.
The areas of corporate development and mergers & acquisitions, which were previously combined as one department, have been separated. Effective April 7, 2008, Leonhard Birnbaum will become head of the new corporate development department. In view of planned company growth, which involves acquisitions, the mergers & acquisitions department will become increasingly important, according to RWE. Andreas Zetzsche will continue to head this department.
After completing his doctorate, Dr Birnbaum joined McKinsey & in 1996 as a consultant focusing on energy and energy-intensive primary industries. He was named principal partner in 2000 and senior partner-director in June 2006. As director, he is a member of McKinsey's management team for the European energy sector. Additionally, the areas of communications and public affairs will also be separated. Peter Heinacher joined RWE as head of the new department of energy policy. Volker Heck will continue in his role as head of communications.
Juergen Grossmann, CEO of RWE, said: "The centralization of key functions in the group lays the foundation for RWE to continue on its growth track with renewed vigor and unity. We are delighted to have found in Leonhard Birnbaum and Peter Heinacher experienced executives to take on the tasks at hand."
