Developing elements of the nuclear fuel cycle and organizing the production in Ukraine of fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants is a strategic task for the state, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan believes.
Speaking at a meeting on developing the nuclear industry on 17 January, Prodan said it was necessary to draft in 2008 a feasibility study for building a nuclear fuel plant in Ukraine, the Fuel and Energy Ministry said today. Prodan also said it was necessary to boost uranium production in Ukraine and make it more efficient so that Ukrainian-made uranium concentrate and, in the future, nuclear fuel remain competitive on global markets.
The meeting agreed that the most realistic investor in Ukraine's nuclear industry is currently the national nuclear energy generating company, Enerhoatom, which operates Ukraine's nuclear power plants. Representatives of nuclear industry companies also supported a proposal to step up activities to attract potential foreign investors to implement new modern mining, chemical and nuclear reactor technologies in Ukraine, the Fuel and Energy Ministry said today.
