The graduate job search is a rite of passage conducted by hundreds of thousands of UK graduates every year. With so many new professionals on the job market, there is a questionable quality to the applications and CV that are sent out around the region. After all, many graduates have the academic and abstract knowledge to succeed in the workplace but often lack the skills to conduct a proper job search. Without a wisely conducted job search, UK graduates won’t be able to get their first break in their particular industry and cannot show off their skills. By conducting a deliberate and wise graduate job search, exceptional candidates can separate themselves from the competition and land their dream job right away.

The first step in wisely searching for graduate jobs is to know what type of job is desired by the graduate. Graduates in every field and industry need to think first about the factors that go into making a great workplace. Some graduates want high responsibilities right away to challenge themselves to improve and advance in their field. Other graduates want a slower paced office where they can work on a few small projects at a time without the pressures of the corporate world. No matter what type of work environment or goals a graduate has, they cannot conduct their job search without taking this first step.

The next move in the wise job hunt is to make sure all application materials are ready to be sent out. Applications should be filled out in full and should highlight the skills that a graduate would bring into the workplace. The CV should be pared down to the necessary qualifications needed to demonstrate competency for the job. Writing samples, portfolio pieces, and anything else should be packaged nicely and refined to give it a professional appearance.

Finally, the time comes for a graduate to start applying for jobs. Graduates should take a multi-tiered approach to applying for jobs. Online job sites and trade publications should be used as an opening salvo of applications and contacts within a particular industry. Graduates should then speak with university advisors and placement services to determine other positions they may have missed in the first part of their job hunt. The final step in the wise job hunt is to consult with a recruiter or placement service that specialises in a graduate’s particular field. Specialty recruiters can help graduates find interesting job opportunities not available in online or print publications.
