Massage is a healing art practiced in all cultures and regions of the world. It is the systematic placing of the hands on a body and applying techniques to treat the body and the person to relieve ailments and stress.

1) Swedish Massage Therapy

This is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States. It is also known as Swedish massage or simply massage therapy.
Massage therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
Swedish massage therapy can be very gentle and relaxing. If you've never had massage before, this is a good one to try first. To learn more, read the full article on Swedish massage.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue techniques are generally designed for more focused massage work. Working a specific joint, muscle or muscle group, the practitioner can access deeper layers of the soft tissue. Each person experiences pressure differently. Starting superficially and easing into the depth of the muscle slowly often allows more movement. If the pressure is applied too deeply or too quickly, the muscle may tighten to protect that area.

Ayurvedic massage
Ayurvedic massage therapy is an ideal remedy for pain. This massage therapy can acts as a real cure in case of arthritis, rheumatism, neurasthenia, high or low blood pressure, sciatica, paralysis, polio and insomnia. In all these cases, your health care provider also prescribes specific medications, changes in daily habits, exercise, etc along with massage therapy.

Facial massage
The arrows indicate the direction you must be working to massage your face. Facial massage revives and conditions your skin. It helps to raise your skin’s temperature, thereby improving the blood circulation. A facial massage also soothes and eases away tensions present in the facial muscles.
A massage is necessary for all skin types. As you grow older gracefully, massage takes a prominent role. Massage done with the right techniques, helps to tone and firm up sagging muscles.

MA-URI Massage

Introduced in 1990, MA-URI is a very new form of massage. It was introduced by Hemi Hoani Fox and its roots are from the Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi Nui dance. This form of massage increases energy flow within the mind and body. Its internal focus is on breathing and concentration. Mental and physical health are the claimed benefits of this type of massage. The MA-URI Institute, headed by Hemi and Katja Fox, advocates and studies the benefits of this type of massage. It is presently difficult to find practitioners, although this may change as this type of massage becomes more popular.

Acupressure
Acupressure is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of accupuncture, and involves the use of finger pressure (without the needles) on specific points along the body. It is is a way of accessing and releasing blocked or congested energy centres in the body. Chinese cultures believe the points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry energy called chi. Western scientists have also mapped out and proven the existence of these points using electrical devices.

Shiatsu Massage
Japanese version of Massage / Acupressure therapy. In this therapy sedation or diplomatic stimulation is given to cure ailments. Often rotary motion is used.
