Disability Discrimination Department (DDA, US) states that a service provider should not indulge themselves in anything discriminatory against disabled people. A website is regarded as a service and therefore comes under the strict scanner of this law.
In last decade, we have seen a turbulent rise of internet, more and more companies are shelving off their online avatars’ in the form of websites, but nearly eighty percent of these websites seems to be oblivious about making any adjustments in accordance with their disabled users. Since serving to the interest of disabled does not solve their marketing conundrum.
“Disabled people do not access our website, so why should we care?” said Mr. Samson Rarefy, Web Marketing Advisor, Sincson INC.
Mr. Samson will gleefully change his mindset once he will analyze the lucrative benefits of having an accessible website:
1) Web site becomes easier to manage
An accessible website separates the content (the words, images and fonts) from the layout (structure of website). Each web page has its own html document which contains images and words directly linked with the CSS (document includes all the disciples for presentation). This CSS document is uniquely accessed by all the pages in website. Minute alteration on all the pages of your website can be achieved with a single adjustment in the CSS file.
2) Wider compatibility
In the recent past, we have witnessed a wild craze for PDA’s, in-car browser’s & wap access on mobile phones. The people making use of these new technologies are the gizmo freaks, who have a lot of money to fuel their coveted “techy tag” . In order to reach this affluent target, you need to make your website accessible on their advanced machines
Test your website with Wapilizer.
3) Search engines give more importance to an accessible website
Yes, your website will appear higher in Search Engines Rankings. Search engines cannot understand the graphics and flash embedded in your website. You can help them by providing text based content related to your website, so that the crawling angels can have better understanding of the main purpose of your website.
Remember, the more confident the search engines are in determining what your website is all about, the higher they will place your website in their organic results.
Adding to this you can have your website in CSS benignly validated for errors by W3C.
4) No fears regarding any legal implications
There has been a continuous pressure from National Blind Federation on all the companies which are seriously flouting the disability clause with their website . The legal bench of NBF is calling summons for all the owners of nearly 1000 websites, asking them to make their website accessible to disabled.
If your company is not following this disability clause in its web site, then I wonder you would soon be hearing a call from them.
5) Website downloads faster
The online users are very impatient in nature. Your website has a whisker of five seconds to attract online user to it, what if these five seconds are wasted in downloading
flash animation, heavy images and dealing with erroneous code.
6) Gain publicity….
“Making your website accessible for all” will attract a lot of applauds from your clients and current website visitors. They will positively acknowledge the fact that here’s a company that cares for an unfortunate group of disabled people.
