It has a great capacity for storage. A compact disc can typically store 700 mega bytes of music. That is a huge capacity considering storage in mp3 file format. Mp3 format reduces the file size to nearly 15 per cent than its previous file formats. A song of 50 mega bytes can be reduced to 5 or 6 mega bytes in mp3 format keeping the sound quality intact. Capacity of a cd is one of its chief advantages.

A cd is very cost effective also. Mass production reduces the cost to a great extent. Secondly, competition among its manufacturers also helps in reducing the cost. Now, it has become highly affordable to the extent that it can be almost termed as cheap.
