With the adaptation of Globalization and Liberalization by the Indian government in the last decade of the twentieth century, India has progressed in each field but the one field in which its growth and progress is unparalleled is that of technology. Its now one of the leading countries in the world with development of new software’s and technologies by its highly trained and experienced technical personalities. Companies like Infosys, Wipro, Tata Indicom, Quark, and many more to name there is no looking back in this field of information technology and generation of employment.
With the development of Information Technology, a new zone associated to it, took birth and that’s Technical writing. Now, the Indian technical writing scenario would seem very bleak for an onlooker who doesn’t delve deeper into the layers. This field was practically unknown till the 1990s. Tata Consultancy Services was a pioneer in creating a need for the current crop of technical wordsmiths.

To be a technical writer a person need not be holding a degree or diploma or any other kind of certificate in the technical field or having a relation to it. A layman can also turn into a technical writer. What he needs to have is a hold on English grammar and putting his ideas to the common man across him and explaining him in simple written English. Therefore, technical writers specialize in writing technology for non-technical persons. So that they can understand it simply, and without bearing the burden to read long texts or manuals to understand a simple technology which is involved in the gadget that they are using.

The demand for technical writing services in India is on a rise. As India progresses in the automobile, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sectors, information technology, the need for technical communicators is bound to rise. It’s a booming employment industry.

The basic job profile of a technical writer is to write user manuals for products, online help files, and multimedia presentations, installation guides for software, among other things. The highest demand for technical writers is generated by the IT industry. The maximum contribution of technical writers is to software companies, as we analyze today. This is because they are involved in a lot of product and project development programmes, their understanding of these programmes and then producing simple English text so that the common man can understand.

In USA and Europe, there are regular full-time courses at undergraduate, graduate, Master’s levels in several Communication schools. There are scholars carrying out studies for PhD degree. This is obviously because there is a major demand for technical writers in the job market. In India, however, the universities have not yet taken cognizance of the job market, though organizations like Society for Technical Communicators, India, and Technical Writers of India have been active for the last few years to spread the word around.

A newbie technical writer with hold on English and having an enthusiasm to work can learn anything between Rs. 6000 to Rs. 8000 per month. If we say that those with two years experience are getting 18,000 and those with four years are getting 25,000; what is the percentage increase per year? It is around 14 percent per year.

These statistics and figures are based on the general analyzes. These keep changing with the change in market figures and according to the country’s economic growth.
