Role Playing Games are normally based on slashing, hacking, and of course spell blasting your way through obstacles. But RPG’s can be much more then this they can involve fantastic relationships, and outsmarting opponents. When one thinks for example of most fairy tales one will see that opponents won victory by outsmarting their opponents rather then defeating them by hand in most cases. In fantasy books it is often the relationships that form rather then the obstacles over come, and the way obstacles are over come that makes the story interesting. For those who have read David Eddings books, one can hardly forget how much fun it was to see characters such as Sparhawk and the thieves he worked with outsmart and set foes up so that victory in many cases would be easy. Certainly at the end of the day Sparhawk had to mop up his opponents but this was merely an step to victory rather then its means.
In books like Harry Potter most of the time is spent in calm exploration of a foreign and fantastical world. The advantage playing RPG games has is that one can create this fantastical world as they play. It is often important to think of playing role playing games as a little like group writing sessions, the game master leads but the others can and should come up with ideas, not just for their characters but for the RPG fantasy world in general. In this way the RPG can become much more like a story that is bigger then anyone of the creators abilities or imaginations, helping everyone to be surprised and excited by the results.
From folklore we will see many fantasy worlds that are able to take on some of the bazaarest twists and turns. One should study such folklore for inspiration, it is after all where CS Lewis and Tolkien got their inspiration. The fairy tales and mythology of the Balkans and Norse countries, the Saxons, and the Celts can all be very exciting additions to the story telling of your fantasy world. The Celts for example have alternate magical worlds such as the world of shadows and the world of dreams. Many Balkans legends tell of distant lands of strange exotic creatures including a hag so large she stole the sun from the sky. Including such stories in your campaign can add the same interest that has gotten generations of people interested in fantasy.
