When word first got out that the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray was being turned into a big budget musical for Broadway, most critics didn’t know what to think. The original film was, at best, a cult classic and one that most folks had never seen. It was notable for several reasons, however.

The original role of main character Tracy Turnblad was played by talk show host Ricki Lake, and it was one of the only John Waters films to not feature anything truly offensive. Yet, little did the critics know that Hairspray would sweep the Tony awards, become a nationwide sensation, and even spawn a remake film based on the musical.

Hairspray is one of the toughest tickets you will find anywhere in the world. There are both touring productions and resident productions of Hairspray all over the globe, and judging by attendance figures, the popularity of the show continues to grow!

Hairspray may be one of the most successful musicals of all time, but the plot is actually very simple. Set in the year 1962, the story centers on an overweight teenager who is nearly obsessed with “The Corny Collins Show,” (a parody of the early 60’s dance shows that showcased new music and the latest dance moves). It is Tracy’s dream to one day be on her favorite show, dancing along with the rest of the teens her age, although when you compare her size to the people already on the show, her prospects look dim.

Through hard work and a bit of luck, Tracy finds herself on stage, on camera, and on the show. While that victory would be enough for most musicals, it is actually just the tip of the iceberg. Feeling that she has helped to open the show to chubby kids, she then takes the next obvious step and tries to take away the racist blocks against African American kids. What follows is a raucous, fun and feel good time that makes Hairspray a winner.

Hairspray stands today as one of the most universally beloved musicals of all time, spawning dozens of touring productions, more awards than you can count and critical praise that most shows long for.

If you see that Hairspray is coming to your town or if you are traveling to a spot where the show is being shown, grab your tickets fast because you might have a hard time finding empty seats!
