I remember the first time that I saw this film in 1968, I was in Korea and I can still picture the fantastic special effects. I credit this film with introducing me to the Johann Strauss waltz “Blue Danube,'' which accompanies the docking of the space shuttle and the space station. It was a slow and deliberate movement filled with awe inspiring scenery and great music. Stanley Kubrick was a genius of a film maker and this is one of his very best works.

The major theme of this movie was mankind finds a mysterious, obviously artificial, artifact buried on the moon and, with the intelligent computer HAL, sets off on a quest. Several mysterious black monoliths are discovered and basically trigger certain events integral to the film. What are they? Where did they come from? What do they do? These are all questions one asks oneself while watching the story develop and is asked to find his own way.

It accurately presents outer space as transmitting no sound. Its portrayal of weightlessness in spaceships and outer space is notable. 2001: A Space Odyssey'' is not about a goal but about a quest, a need. It does not obligate its effects on specific plot points, nor does it ask us to identify with astronauts Dave Bowman[Keir Dulla] and Frank Poole [Gary Lockwood]or any other character. It beckons to us as if to say: We became men when we learned to think. Our minds have given us the tools to understand where we live and who we are. Now it is time to move on to the next step, to know that we live not on a planet but among the stars,[very profound] and that we are not flesh but intelligence.

It is today recognized by critics as one of the greatest films ever made; a poll of critics in 2002 ranked it among the top ten films of all time. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received one for visual effects.

In 1991, it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in their National Film Registry. Even after almost 40 years, this is still an amazing movie. It is no wonder that fans of all space movies consider this to be not only a classic film, but the really first great space movie of all times. This will be remembered for a long time.
