Jatamanshi oil
Jatamanshi oil also known as Spikenard Oil is derived from the roots of Nardostachys Jatamansi. It belongs to the botanical family Valerianaceae.
The plant grows wild and is occasionally cultivated in India, China and Japan.
The dried roots are steam distilled in India ,Europe and U.S.A. The dried rhizomes are steam-distilled to yield between 1 - 2% of essential oil, commercially known as Spikenard oil in English.
The oil has a heavy,sweet,woody,spicy,animalic,musky odor and earthy base note.
It is used upto 2% in fragrance formulations.
Due to musky, earthy,woody and balsamic odour the oil can be used in variety of perfume formulation to give special touch in low conc. In large dosages it can be used in oriental type of perfume.
It is used in perfumery such as oriental bases, heavy florals, fougeres, woody bases, animal, ambri types and in flavors as a modifier for valerian, hop, ginger, calamus, cardamom, etc.
The oil also finds its applications in aromatherapy and in medicines.Oil is used as tonic, stimulant and antispasmodic. It is used for epilepsy, hysteria and convulsion infection and palpitating heart. Root oil with other combination is useful for curing snake bite and scorpion bite.
It blends well with Tonka, Violet, Vetiver, Pine Needle,Patchouli.
The chemical composition[ in %] of major components is as follows;
Seychellene-1-2
Patchouli alcohol-5-7
Alpha-patchoulene-25-30
Beta-ionone-1-2
Gurjunene-26-32
Hydroxy-arstolenone-5-7
The minor components in the oil are Alpha&Beta-pinene, Aristolenone, Cineole,etc.
