Even though cosmetic eyelid surgery, which is also known as blepharoplasty, is an elective surgery and is not considered a major surgery, it is important to be educated on what to expect before, during, and after the procedure occurs. Having adequate knowledge on the entire surgery process will make the experience positive and successful. There are common questions and concerns that individuals wonder when deciding if eyelid surgery is the best option for them. It is important to make sure that all concerns and questions should be discussed so the person can use their best judgment when making such a life-changing decision.

One of the most common questions that individuals want answered is what exactly is involved during eyelid surgery. Patients can have eyelid surgery on either the upper or lower eyelid, with many choosing to have both lids worked on during the procedure. The upper eyelid surgery consists of the plastic surgeon removing excess fat and skin from the area through an incision on the lid that usually never leaves a noticeable scar. During a lower eyelid procedure, puffy bags under the eyes can be diminished as well as wrinkled skin. Since each individual is different the technique varies. For some patients, a small incision is made just below the eyelash line which will allow little if any noticeable scarring.

Recovery time is always a concern since patients have to take off from work and change their everyday activities. Typically, patients rest at home for one week after surgery. Eyelid skin happens to be the most delicate on the body so it tends to swell and bruise following the procedure. It is the most noticeable for one week after surgery which is another reason that patients are encouraged to rest at home. Within two weeks the swelling and bruising often will subside. Patients can usually return to their everyday activities during the same time. Depending on the individual, within one week after surgery they can return to work if they choose.

Every type of surgery has risks. That does not mean it is likely to occur, but patients should be aware of what may happen following surgery. Risks include frequent dry eyes, residual fat bags or wrinkles, and changes in the lower eyelid. There are other risks that will most likely be discussed during the consultation with the surgeon.

The cost of eyelid surgery is an important question to get answered. Since eyelid surgery is elective the cost will vary depending on the plastic surgeon. One determining factor is the surgeon’s experience fee. Another cost factor is the facility where the surgery is done. There is also a fee for anesthesia.

No one should blindly decide on having a surgery. Getting answers to questions and discussing concerns is the best way to have a good surgical experience
