In the past, the only option you had to get straighter teeth was awkward metal braces. Typically, if you didn’t get your crooked teeth corrected as a kid, you were not going to have a straighter smile. As more adults turned to orthodontics to get the straighter smile they did not get as a kid, more options become available, allowing adults to fix their teeth without the look of metal braces.

One of the more popular orthodontic options for adults who want to straighten their teeth is Invisalign®. Often referred to as “invisible braces,” Invisalign® is actually comprised of several sets of clear aligners that fit over the teeth. These clear orthodontics can be used to correct crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, crowded teeth, and teeth with gaps.

In addition to a better look than metal braces, Invisalign® aligners are also more comfortable than traditional braces. Gone are the sharp wires and harsh edges of metal braces. Instead, the invisible aligners have smooth, rounded edges with nothing protruding off of the tooth and poking into the inside of the cheek.

In many cases, Invisalign® aligners can correct a crooked smile in the same time span (or even less time) than traditional braces. Unlike metal braces that are affixed to teeth and then constantly adjusted through the tightening of wires and brackets, Invisalign® treatment uses a series of 20 to 30 aligners that are changed every few weeks, shifting the teeth into predetermined patterns. The aligners can also be removed when you eat or brush and floss your teeth.

The Invisalign® system costs almost the same as traditional metal braces. Depending on the extent of the straightening needed, the dentist, and the location of the dental practice, Invisalign® aligners can cost between $3,000 and $4,000.

So, if you want straighter teeth, but don’t think you want to deal with metal braces, talk to your dentist or orthodontist about the option of Invisalign® aligners.
