If you are a small business you better read this.
Many of you believe that in order for you to save on your expenses, you have to cut on costs. And that would mean cutting your marketing budget. However, this would be the meanest thing that you can do for your business. If you want to crush your small business to the ground, then go ahead and cut your marketing budget.
But if you do not want to, then understand that marketing is very critical to your survival especially at these trying times. Do not simply rely on the Yellow Pages or the Dailies to get you through. If you want to stay afloat and ahead of your competition, you need to fully market and advertise your products and services, be it printing brochures or custom brochures, e-newsletters, or creating your own website.
So why do slashing your marketing budget is a no-no? For one thing, you may not recover at all if you do. We are in a recession right now. Everybody knows that. But instead of wallowing in the valley of despair, as the great Martin Luther King, Jr, would say, you have to rise up to the occasion and live your dream. With marketing, of course.
Recessions are times that everybody cuts on their spending. Businesses do cut their expenses. But deciding where to slash your budget is significant to the growth of your business. If you think that the marketing budget is the first thing that can be reduced, then you have another think coming. Cut jobs, reduce your manufacturing, and re-evaluate the costs of your products and services – whatever it is, just leave your marketing budget alone. You need to generate leads to your business, and only marketing can do a good job of that.
But marketing alone cannot work successfully. It may play a big role in getting you your customers, but it is not enough to help you survive on the long term. What you need after successfully marketing your business is to have a stable tracking system in place to check whether your ads have done a good job of convincing people to take you up on your offer.
Whether you have printing brochures, custom brochures or color flyers and bookmark hang tags as your marketing strategy, you need to keep track of their performance so you will know how well or how poorly your choice of advertising is doing. Unless you can know how your ads are performing, you can never have a truly successful marketing campaign that you can use to significantly increase your business growth.
So if you are tired of seeing your business doing less than what you expect, then rely on marketing for your solutions. Do not just take it out of the picture just because it gets a huge chunk of your cash. The more you market in these trying times, the better chances you will have of getting ahead of your competition.
