Aromatherapy is an herbal therapy where physical and mental states may be altered for the better through the use of pleasant-smelling herbs. Herbs are used as the plants from which organic essential oils, such as lavender essential oil, are extracted. The resulting organic essential oils are the herbs in their purest form, and are very concentrated oils, making them especially useful in aromatherapy applications.

Organic essential oils can be taken out of the herb plants in a couple of different ways. One common method is through a distillation process using steam. Another way used is expressing, or pressing, the oil from the plant.

Topical Applications of Aromatherapy Oils

Organic essential oils are wonderful when used in massage and bath preparations. Because the aromatherapy oils are the pure essence of the plant and so concentrated, they must be used with a carrier oil when the product is to be applied to the skin. A popular one used in massage therapy as well as for bathing is sweet almond oil, although grapeseed oil and many others are also used.

Massage treatment involves the manipulation of the soft tissue by the hands, fingers and even elbows. Massage oil with aromatherapy oils added are used to allow the hands and fingers to glide smoothly over the skin.

Aerial Diffusion of Aromatherapy Oils

Another way that lavender essential oil and other organic essential oils are used is by scenting the air. Aromatherapy diffusers are the tools used to accomplish this feat.

All diffusers consist of some type of container to hold the essential oil and a means of heating the oil. Heated oil readily releases its fragrance, and thus is used in aromatherapy applications.

There are a wide variety of sizes and shapes of aromatherapy diffusers that are used with organic essential oils. Large rooms can be filled with scent when substantial electric aromatherapy diffusers are used. Some of these better products also come with fans to spread the fragrance even more rapidly in the area you desire.
Smaller areas benefit from a candle diffuser or a lamp ring diffuser. Candle diffusers feature a decorative basin containing lavender essential oil or other types of scented oil that is held in place above a lit candle to release the aroma. Hollow ceramic or metal lamp rings have drops of essential oil placed inside, and then the rings go on top of a light bulb in use in any lamp. When the lamp is turned on, the heat from the bulb releases your favorite fragrance.

For both topical and aerial uses, aromatherapy oils provide the fragrances for which you are looking.
