The State of Florida, much like other states, has several old laws that are quite funny but never enforced. Here are some funny laws in Florida that are perfectly real:
In the state of Florida, you may not, of course, have more than one husband or wife at a time. That would be bigamy. However, if your spouse abandons you and remains absent for only three years, you may remarry, as long as you don’t know whether your former spouse is alive or dead. Only three years! (Statute 826.02)
You are not allowed to expose your sexual organs in public, or even in private, if it is deemed vulgar or indecent. That is why a man will get in trouble for mowing the lawn while wearing a skirt and no underwear, if his private parts are exposed during the act of mowing his lawn. (Statute 800.03)
There is, by law, an Elevator Safety Technical Advisory Council. The eight members of this council are appointed and serve four year terms. The council members serve without compensation (meaning they don’t get paid to sit on the council), which may be the only reason the Elevator Safety Technical Advisory Council has not been repealed by Florida legislators. (Statute 399.1061)
Other funny Florida laws include that a man is not allowed to wear a strapless gown (thank goodness!), and no person is allowed to have sexual relations with a porcupine (ouch!).
There are also laws governing your own personal body functions: it is illegal to shower naked in the State of Florida, and you can not fart in a public location after the hour of 6 p.m. If that wasn’t enough, you’re also only allowed to have sex in the missionary position, so don’t tell!
These laws may be humorous, but they are definitely real in the State of Florida. If you are ever charged with violating one of these statutes (not very likely!), consult an experienced attorney; you may be able to claim the law has been long unenforced and does not apply in your situation.
