A lot of people have always been fascinated with waterbeds but still do not understand how it works. In a nutshell, these are just beds made of really tough plastic that contain water. And FYI, waterbed mattresses do come in different firmness levels.
The first type is the free flow waterbed mattress. As the name suggests, the water in this bed is flowing freely. If you easily get motion sickness, try to avoid this type as sleeping on this is similar to sleeping on a boat. And also if you are sharing a bed with someone, keep in mind that whoever is heavier, his or her side will become more lopsided.
The second kind of waterbed mattress is called the hydraulic. It is filled with water and tiny vinyl coils that help regulate the movement of the liquid. This means that the more vinyl coils, the firmer the bed will be.
The third type of waterbed mattress is called the water bed fiber filled mattress. This mattress is filled with both water and fiber. The fiber is used to also reduce the water movement and just like the hydraulic, the more fiber, the firmer the bed will get. Be sure to check the fiber count to be aware of density of the mattress.
So with the knowledge of the basic waterbed mattress firmness, what now are the pros and cons to owning one?
During winter time, the heating feature is very useful especially for people who easily get cold. By heating the water within the bed, your muscles will be warmed and relaxed all through the cold winter night, preventing stiff joints and body aches. It’s also a lot easier to clean compare to the regular mattresses available in the market. Dust and grime cannot penetrate the mattress since it is made of tough plastic. If you itch, you can be assured that it is not because of bed bugs. Waterbed mattresses are also known for their snug feature. You can be assured that you will get a good night’s sleep on one, just as long as the firmness is suited to you.
Now on to the cons; yes, with a waterbed mattress it is a fact that you can heat the water within, but do you know how expensive that is to maintain? Aside from that, you can very well expect leaking from it at least once in the time frame of you owning it. This will cause you inconvenience as it’s very troublesome to put and remove water in the bed. And do not forget how much damage your floor or carpeting will get once it starts to seep. Think of it as an instant flood in your bed room. Come to think of it, there is also a lot of other cheaper substitute for waterbed mattresses like the air bed. It is a smidgen of the cost and more lightweight. It is also a nuisance to move. You cannot do it by yourself as waterbed mattresses are really heavy.
Just weigh these pros and cons and pick which of the three types of waterbed mattresses is best suited to you to utilize the full waterbed experience.
