In some ways, the 1960s were a golden time in Puerto Vallarta. The town was just on the verge of hitting the big time, but it wasn’t there yet. Still mostly a peaceful fishing village, it was already becoming a haven for Hollywood types, including director John Huston and actors Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Still, the odds of finding a luxury villa rental Puerto Vallarta back in the day were slimmer than they are today.
Star quality
As will happen, notoriety of the film star type turned Puerto Vallarta into a star, as well. The old fishing village is only vaguely recognizable in the vibrant resort city you’re visiting today. It’s still there, though, and if you’re interested, you can experience some of the magic from the old days when you explore the work of local artists from that era, artists like Manuel Lepe.
Lepe was born in Puerto Vallarta in 1936, and he lived in the town of his birth for most of his life. If his art is any kind of reflection of what was in his heart, he took great joy in the world around him. Lepe painted in a style known as naïf; in fact, his biggest fans suggest he is among the pioneers of naïf art. Pioneer or not, his work has achieved international attention: UNICEF has used three of his pieces to promote child welfare around the world.
A lesson in naïf art
All artists view their subjects in their own particular way and they all take a unique approach to their work. Painters associated with the naïf genre are no different, although the genre itself can be identified by a few distinct characteristics. First, most naïf painters are self-taught; and they have a vision that is theirs alone. Those qualities on their own could refer to any child with a crayon; a naïf artist, on the other hand, has talent. Lepe and his work certainly fit that definition.
Puerto Vallartans are justifiably proud of this native son; in fact, a print of one of his pieces might adorn the wall in your luxury villa rental Puerto Vallarta. If you love this feast for the eyes, see more of the man and his work with a visit to the Manuel Lepe Museum at 485 Jacarandas. A colorful collection of his work is on display in the same building that was his home and his studio. Give yourself a treat – spend a day in the gently colorful world of Lepe.
