It is now well know that when you use positive thoughts and approaches to dog obedience training, your dog will enjoy his training and reward you with good behavior. Treating your dog with kindness and respect will determine how he will learn and behave during training.

When you think positive thoughts to train your dog, your dog will respond. Dogs have a natural sense of what humans feel and think. So, when you use abusive action, your dog will get confused and not know what to do.

Dog obedience training with positive reinforcement works very well with dogs. Remember that your dog has a natural inclination to try to please you – which makes positive reinforcement effective. Your dog will also remember these lessons better and repeat the desired behavior more consistently.

These are some ideas to use when you are training your dog. Remember be positive when you first start. Dogs can sense your mood and will react to it, so be positive not negative.

1. The rewards to give your dog. Before you start training your dog, decide what kind of reward you want to give him. You want your dog to be excited about what you give him. If he is excited, he will do anything you say, as he gains understanding as to what you want, to get that reward. You should only use this reward for training and not as his regular rewards at home.

2. Timing is everything when you do dog obedience training. When you give a command and your dog obeys, you need to give them a reward immediately so that they will associate the behavior with the treat. If you wait, your dog won’t understand why they’re getting the treat – make sure to give rewards promptly and this will improve your dog training results.

Many people use a clicker for dog training. A clicker is a small metal device which makes a click-click sound. Click your clicker at the exact moment that your dog obeys a command, followed immediately by a treat. Your dog learns to associate the action, click and the treat.

You don’t have to use the clicker, but some people like it. Use your voice as a clicker. When you give a command try to keep the same pitch and tone. Give a command feeling positive and strong. Don’t use this voice tone when you are not training your dog.

When you start with your dog obedience training, determine what type of command technique you will use. Don’t use the clicker one day and your strong voice the next. Always be consistent with the way you train your dog. This will eventually let your dog know that it is training time. If you make training fun, your dog will look forward to dog training time.

Even if your dog is exceptionally smart, you need to keep in mind that your dog can only understand a few words. You can teach your old dog new tricks, but you have to be consistent with both markers and rewards in order to be successful in teaching your dog desirable behaviors.

If you stick with your dog obedience training method, your dog will learn much more quickly – and you’ll be much happier with the results of your dog training as well. Take your time when you train your dog and you and your dog will have a lot of fun.
