One of the most respected and awed B-School chains in the world, the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) have had some of the best talents from all over the world queuing up for an MBA degree from their premises. However, as with all premier MBA colleges in India as well as globally, the admission procedure grills the potential student thoroughly only to allow the best to come through. This is why CAT or Common Aptitude Test is considered one of the hardest tests to crack, even for the best brains in the country. The CAT question and section patterns change each year, so a tip session on how to crack CAT effectively is almost useless. What is more important though is the final preparation that students do before going in for the grind – The pre-test preparations, especially on the last day!
Here are some useful tips on how one may prepare so as to practically implement the year long preparations and come up with an optimal performance in CAT.
1. Relax. This is THE mantra before taking the CAT test. If you are prepared well, getting worked up and nervous on the D-Day itself will negate all the preparation you have made till date.
2. Sleep Well. It is important to get your average quota of sleep on the night before in order to prevent fatigue and stress which might take a toll on your performance in the test.
3. Dress Well. It is an important factor to dress as comfortably as you can. As it is only the preliminaries, taking the test in your worn-out jeans and that favorite faded t-shirt will add comfort and confidence in your stride.
4. Take the Computer Tutorial diligently. Don’t rush through this part, as for those who are not yet familiar with giving the test in computer, it may prove a real time-wasting strategy to stop and check for help when the test is on. You can also run mock tests on your home PC to get used to the system.
5. Check in Well in Time. Being late may dent your advantage over other guys. Moreover, being familiar with the testing facility will help you gain much-needed confidence. It might also come in handy if you need to get a leak during the test, saving oodles of precious time!
6. Keep all Equipment and Your Admit Card safe. Be prepared beforehand, packing all the stuff that you require overnight. For outstation candidates, it is important to reach the location of the venue at least a couple of days before the test.
7. A Last Minute Touch-up. Avoid consulting your friends or listening on to discussions among other groups. This will only get you confused and worried about the preparation of others. Focus on what you have studied and make it a point that all the answers within these topics are answered well!
8. Work conditions. Do make sure that you are at your comfortable best regarding the environs. If not, it’s better to speak up and change that high seat or the dysfunctional light overhead, rather than regretting these as reasons for a poor performance later.
9. Time Management. Don’t waste your time dilly dallying over answers. And more importantly, manage your time well and pace yourself such that you can give an equal amount of time for each answer.
10. Do not quit. Most candidates who decide to quit or give up their answer sheets do it in panic and not realistic ground check. Give it your best shot and leave only when the final bell rings!
