Proximity cards are used by organizations that want to provide a secure physical area that authorized personal can access. To make this process work, a proximity card is issued to specific personnel who need access into the secure area. Proximity card readers are installed on appropriate doors. To enter the area, a cardholder is required to pass their card near the proximity reader to direct the door to open and provide entrance.
When the card is swiped, the proximity card receives the information that is stored on the card and forwards it to the access control software on the controlling computer network. The software analyzes the information and determines whether the door will be given access capabilities or whether the access request will be denied.
Proximity cards can also be used to provide access to computer networks and other resources the company may wish to control. A computer network may be partitioned up into areas that the general employee can access and into other areas that require appropriate authorization.
Proximity readers and access control systems are typically easy to install. They do not easily fail as the readers are usually set up with a battery backup system.
Proximity cards do not usually come in contact with the access reader. The card can be held close to the reader and the information can be transmitted. Some cards even can be read from a longer distance. Cards that are carried in a briefcase or purse can be used to unlock a door automatically when a cardholder walks up to the door.
Proximity cards are versatile and can be used almost anywhere. The readers can be placed in various areas of a building and the reader will only respond to the authorized cards that come within close distance to it.
Places that currently have proximity systems include federal government divisions, state governments, schools, hospitals, businesses and many more.
The proximity technology can be applied to both large and small businesses. The technology is now becoming affordable and is beneficial to most every organization.
