Many of us nowadays lead busy and often stressful lives and this can lead to several sleep problems including insomnia. For far too many of us this means reaching for the sleeping pills as a fast and easy solution but, sadly, this short term solution all too often leads to long term problems as addiction to sleeping pills sets in, they are no longer as effective as they once were and side effects begin to rear their ugly head.

The true answer to sleep problems therefore is to look for an alternative method of treatment and to find an insomnia cure which does not involve using sleeping pills. So, here are four easy things to help in getting a sound night's sleep.

1. Take some regular exercise. Exercise is a very good way to reduce the stress of life and there are a lot of exercise routines available nowadays. For instance, you not have to confine your exercise to the gym which many us find to be boring to say the least. Aerobic exercises is particularly effective and so any form of outdoor games, walking, swimming, tennis, badminton and many other similar activities are fine. Remember though that you ought not to take exercise too close to bedtime and so late afternoon or early evening is a great time to pick.

2. Practice some form of relaxation. To get a good night's sleep you need to relax your body and your mind and that means taking a bit of quiet time to focus your attention on clearing your mind and relaxing your body. Here there are all kinds of different relaxation techniques which you can follow and the key is to find one which you like and which works for you and then to set fifteen or twenty minutes aside each evening to practice relaxation before going to bed.

3. Have a. It is often said that 'laughter is the best medicine' and there is a great deal of truth in this. We are not talking here necessarily about laughing out loud in true 'belly laugh' style and for many people any activity which raises a smile is enough. A good way to do this is to watch a comical television program, instead of an action packed movie, in the evening or to read a humorous book or magazine before going to sleep.

4. Make sure that you eat the correct foods. The body is essentially a chemical processing plant and the food which you eat has a noticeable effect on the degree of chemical activity in the body. Consequently it is important that you avoid foods which are going to have a stimulant effect in the hours before going to bed. For instance, steer clear of things like caffeine and alcohol and rich foods such as those which are high in sugar. You should also avoid consuming a heavy meal too close to bedtime and, though you ought not to go to bed feeling hungry, a light snack which is just enough to take away those hunger pangs, instead of a hamburger and fries is the answer to a good night's sleep.

Naturally, these are only 4 of the many different things which you can do to ensure that you get a good night's sleep and the real secret to curing insomnia is to find natural lifestyle answers and not follow the traditional route of sleeping pills which far too many people have taken for years.
