United Kingdom homeowners have understood the Corgi certificate to be a stamp of approval for gas plumbers and now that approval is going to be given by a company called Capita. In three months' time, the certification for gas plumbers will be issued by a company named Capita. The same company will monitor those certifications. Corgi will cease its involvement in the process.
For almost twenty years, Corgi has been in charge of making sure that homes meet gas safety standards. In April of 2009, the Capita Company will take over for the Corgi Company as the official gas safety protocol company for the Health and Safety Executive office.
The gas plumbing industry professionals will not change their every day operations once Capita takes charge of certifications and standards. Both standards companies have publicly said that business will be normal for Corgi employees all the way up until end of business on March 31st. April 1, 2009 marks the start of Capita's reign over gas standards. Neither company has issued an official statement about how natural gas consumers will be affected by the change. Corgi and Capita have both assured the public that they will do what they can to make sure that what bumps do occur are small.
Consumers should not worry about whether or not they will remain protected after Corgi Company stops its control and Capita begins taking charge. The Health and Safety Executive office has made it very clear that the reason Capita is taking over for Corgi in 2009 is that Capita showed that it had more initiative for making sure natural gas consumers were well educated about the dangers involved with natural gas consumption.
Corgi's contract went up for bid after a 2006 survey of homeowners in the United Kingdom proved that more than fifty percent of the homes serviced by Corgi professionals were unaware of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide. Natural gas customers will find a number of benefits involved with Capita taking over for Corgi, especially in terms of natural gas education.
Corgi will continue to be in charge of plumber registrations. Certifications and gas regulations will not change until the end of business on March 31st, 2009. As of the start of business on April 1st, 2009, Capita will take over for inspections and employment of the nation's natural gas plumbers.
Capita is expected to hire 250 Corgi employees to ensure that the change is smooth, but both companies agreed that rather than a murky transition season, the change would involve definitive dates of operation in place. After April 1st, gas plumbers will need to comply with regulations set forth by Capita Company. The change for Consumers is expected to be minimal.
