Quite a large percentage of people suffer from gingivitis, also called gum disease. Gingivitis or gum disease is in fact all too common. It is said that almost all adults suffer from it at some points, and at this very minute, 80% are experiencing some of its symptoms. But this of course varies on the severity of the condition. Gingivitis does come in different degrees, as much as most other diseases do.

Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of Gingivitis, because when plaque stays on your teeth for more than a few days it turns into tartar. Tartar then starts to build up next to your gums, and causes irritation and can lead to Gingivitis. The worst thing about tartar is that it can not be removed by brushing and flossing alone. The only way to get rid of tartar is to have your teeth professionally cleaned by a dentist.

Left untreated, gingivitis will worsen to eventually include bone loss and tooth loss and a more severe condition known as periodontitis. Additionally, teeth will become loose and fall out, leading to the need for expensive dental implants.

In order to treat gingivitis, a dentist or dental hygienist must thoroughly clean both the gums and the teeth. The process generally is not painful and the inflammation usually disappears after one or two weeks if the patient maintains proper oral hygiene care following the cleaning. This includes brushing, flossing, and using an anti-bacterial rinse or mouthwash.

One of the easiest ways to treat gingivitis is with Myrrh. Yes, the gift given by the king at Jesus’ birth. That in itself has value in my book. Another important ingredient is Propolis, which is found in honey. Both are available in high quality toothpaste purchased from a reputable health food store. Having said this, in my estimation, it’s always better to make what ever you can at home.

Medical studies show a clear correlation between gum disease and heart disease, proving that people with gum disease have a 25 percent greater risk of heart disease. Scientists have just begun to understand how inflammatory gum disease releases pro-inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream, triggering a systemic inflammatory response.

In the earlier stages of gingivitis, it’s possible to reverse the condition with good dental care and mouthwash. The goal is to keep your mouth clean so the gums can heal. Brush your teeth, floss daily, use a mouthwash and if your gums aren’t to swollen and sore, carefully brush the gums as well. This massaging stimulates the gum tissue and removes bacteria and any loose skin layers.

Gingivitis can be overcome with a series of treatments. But, where does this condition come from? A variety of problems can bring it on, but most often it is a build up of plaque that allows bacteria to form. These bacteria results in a gum disease that will eat at your gums. The gums become inflamed, painful, swollen and often bleed because of it. If no treatment is sought, the condition will continue to worsen until the gums are virtually depleted leaving the teeth vulnerable.
