While many people think of breast augmentation surgery as a relatively new innovation, breast implant surgeries were in fact performed as early as 1890. These procedures of course, were extremely primitive and prone to complications. However, these procedures also led the way to cosmetic advancements and were the precedents to the more refined procedures we have today.

The first implants were performed using paraffin injections to increase the size of the women's breast. However, this technique offered too many risks and complications including lumps that would form in the breast and a hardening of the breast tissue. Even so, many women had the procedure performed in an effort to increase their breast size, but by 1920, the paraffin injection method was abandoned for more advanced methods.

At this time, surgeons started to use fatty tissue from other areas of the body in order to give the women breast implants. Generally, the fat was taken from the women's buttocks or abdominal area and was then placed into the breast. While less dangerous than the paraffin injections, the fatty tissue breast implants were also sub-par, since the body would eventually reabsorb the fat into itself, causing the breasts to become asymmetrical and lumpy. Furthermore, the removal of the fat from the abdomen or buttocks would leave an extremely prominent scar that most patients found undesirable.

By the 1940's, most surgeons had completely stopped performing the fatty tissue method of breast implants. For some time, there was a lull in the procedures performed as surgeons attempted to find a method that would be most successful. By the 1960's silicone breast implants were starting to become popular, having first come into use in Japanese prostitutes that would receive the implants in an effort to attract American servicemen that were serving overseas during World War II. However, the silicone proved to cause infections and other negative conditions that resulted in damage to the patient.

Trial and error, as well as advancements made in modern medicine, have perfected the breast implant to what it is today. Doctors today use a safer method of silicone, as well as saline implants to perform breast augmentation procedures that provide excellent results. In fact, breast augmentation is one of the number one cosmetic surgery procedures performed each year.
