Many will swear by the old-fashioned appeal of wood stoves when it comes to heating their homes. There is nothing like the smell of wood burning, and the crackling of the fire adds a touch of romance to the atmosphere. With the rising costs of most other heating sources, more people are turning to wood stoves every day simply to save money.

Today's modern wood stoves, chimneys, burn more efficiently than they used to. Production of wood stoves is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency so that they meet stringent emission limits. The resulting wood stoves produce much less smoke than the ones you may remember. They burn cleanly and more hot, burning less wood in the process. Wood stoves and fireplaces can also be dressed up nicely with fireplace accessories to make them quite attractive.

When you decide to install a wood stove, remember that it will give off a large amount of heat in the area closest to the unit whereas rooms further away or on a different level will remain cooler. That is why it is important to select the proper location for your new wood stove. Generally, a room that is centrally located would be best.

A central location will help the heat to disperse throughout the rest of the living space evenly. Since many people prefer their bedrooms to be a bit cooler, the kitchen or living room is usually the ideal spot for wood stoves. If the room has or had a fireplace in it, that would be very useful as the chimney would already be in place. Of course, any existing fireplace and chimney should be thoroughly cleaned and examined by a professional to ensure safe operation.

Especially in colder climates, wood stoves can pay for themselves within the first couple of winters. Once the initial cost is recovered, you will save money year after year. With that in mind, it is wise to buy the most efficient model possible within your budget. That way, you can enjoy many years of low cost heat for your home.
