Dyeing with different colors

• Gemstones are dyed with some artificial and un natural colors dyes and it is a most commonly accepted and prevalent process.

• Dyeing is usually done to conceal the poor quality of the gemstone.

• Dyeing of a gemstone is quite cheap and effective which makes it quite significant and worthwhile.

Coating of outer surface

• For polishing and finishing of the gemstone the coating is done.

• Coating leaves a distinguished and great finish and look on the gemstone.

Bleaching of gemstones

• Bleaching is used on gemstones to lighten their colors chemically. Some bleaching chemicals are used.

• Bleaching is done on some specific gemstones which are of organic type, such as ivory, coral and pearl.

• Bleaching is used on gemstones to keep their mineral in a good condition and to make it shiny and faint colored.

Irradiation (Radiation)

• In Irradiation gemstones are exposed to some atomic radiations, which produce heat to improve its color and to get some newly oriented colors.

• It is used on Blue Topaz to acquire some shades which are not found in the natural non-irradiated blue topaz gemstone

• These gemstones are specially regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency which is based in the U.S.A to assure no dangerous residual radiation.

• Natural red gemstones can rarely be differentiated from pink gemstones as Tourmaline are irradiated into red gemstones, because of which, tourmalines will be sold off at reasonable prices even if the colors of the gemstone are tend to appear similar.

• Colors like green, yellow, blue and brown can be brought about in off-colored diamonds through the process of irradiations and heating. Thus, achievement of gorgeous colors which otherwise would not be available.

Diffusion of outer surface

• This diffusion treatment is throwing extreme amount of heat on the exterior surface of the gemstone. It is usually used for Sapphire.

• At high temperatures, chemicals are implanted onto the surface of the gemstone to get better color.

Filling of spores in outer surface

• Filling is a method used to put exterior particles and materials into hollow spaces and spores of the gemstones. These hollow spaces are created during the finishing process of the gemstones. For this purpose many materials such as glass, plastic and others are generally used to fill up the holes on the gemstone’s outer surface. This method is commonly applied on rubies. Only after close analysis such fillings can be detected. But due to a chance of customer cheating this process is not preferred.

Infilling (breaking of hollow spaces)

• Infilling is usually used on emeralds, rubelite and tourmalines. In this process hollow spaces are broken in opticon, plastic and glass so that the gemstone remains tight, fixed, flexible and precise.
