Any house is incomplete without appropriate furniture. Furniture can be very simple or costly depending on your need and style of living. If you visit a furniture store you can find a wide variety of furniture made of various materials. Most common materials used are wood, steel and plastic. This article is a probe into the different type of furniture depending on the material used for manufacturing and their comparative cost, durability, availability and suitability for various purposes.

One of the materials which have been used traditionally for making furniture is wood. Such is the versatility of this material that practically all the furniture which we come across can be made from wood. Wood is a soft material and is easily workable. Wooden furniture generally has nice and smooth finish and can be maintained for long periods by occasional polishing. Beautiful carvings can be carried out on it. Modern living room furniture with beautiful carvings can give an attractive look to your living room. Cost of wooden furniture varies vastly depending on the type of wood and other ornamental work on it. Furniture made of certain types of wood like oak, teak and rosewood are very durable and more expensive. Wooden furniture is best suited to homes as these provide elegance and lifelong service.

Furniture is also made of different type of metals. Initially iron furniture, painted or electroplated, was only made. These would get rusted and so use of aluminum and stainless steel became more acceptable. These are not as durable as one might think it to be but are capable of withstanding rough handling. These are generally not suited to make bedroom furniture but are commonly used for making chairs. Furniture of this type is mostly found in offices, lobbies and waiting halls.

Plastic fiber is another material used in furniture manufacturing. Here furniture is made by molding molten plastic fiber granules, hence the name molded furniture. Even though plastic can be molded to any shape, its use in furniture manufacture is mostly limited to making chairs and light tables. These are less durable. They are suitable for public places and large gatherings due to low cost and ease of storage.

Materials like cane and reeds are also used to make furniture. Sofas made of cane with beautiful cushions can be seen in the living room of traditional homes. Furniture of this type is somewhat delicate and need to be used carefully. They are suitable only to homes. These materials are available only in certain pockets of the country.

There are other options available to you such as glass furniture, leather furniture, and so on. Take your final pick only after surveying all the types of furniture up for sale.
