Homeowners worry about their roofs. After all, roof repair work can be costly, and a damaged roof can cause any number of problems, from leaks to structural damage. A good roof does more than place a barrier between you and the elements – it also keeps your home cozy and beautiful and ensures a pleasant life in your home. Professional contractors suggest that you maintain your roof with the following roof repair tips:

1) It’s a lot easier to fix a roof when the damage is minor, but many homeowners do not look up and notice any potential problems. Once in a while, look up and use binoculars to note any torn or missing shingles or any gaps in your roofing material. If you have lived in your home for some time and do not know how old your roof is or when work was last done on it, call a trusted professional for an inspection. There may be damage that is not yet visible that needs to be addressed. Many roofs will last for two decades or more, and if your roof is older than that, it could start leaking with no warning whatsoever, even if it looks fine.

2) Get trees pruned back so that they do not lash your roof. Trees near your roof can rip tiles and allow squirrels to scamper over your tiles, damaging them.

3) Avoid walking on your roof. Your weight on your roof can damage the tiles and even the roof structure. Climbing a ladder to do your own roof repair can do more harm than good, so it is a good idea to leave the roof work to professionals. It’s safer, as well – falling from your roof can be fatal.

4) If you wish to do your own roof repair and know how to do so, make sure that you play it safe. Take your time and always work with someone who can hold the ladder for you and call for help if you get stuck. Wear sturdy, non-slip, rubber-soled shoes and use a sturdy ladder. In general, you will only want to complete very simple repairs yourself. If you have holes in your roof causing leaks, for example, you may temporarily seal the holes with plastic sheeting or tar paper. You can also fix very small holes with a trowel and some roofing plastic cement. Larger, permanent roofing jobs should be handled by professionals who can ensure the job is done correctly.
