I like going to Parade of Homes tours to get ideas for decorating and to see the latest in home technology. I have noticed many homes have bathrooms that are almost as big as the bedroom. Then there are other older homes where the bathroom seems to have been an after thought. I have an itty bitty bathroom that is so small I can reach both walls by just spreading my arms out (and not the whole way). I have come up with some useful tips I find work well in a small bathroom.
Organizing a small bathroom can be a challenge and fun at the same time.
• Take out all the clutter, items not being used yet have found their way to the bath room such as too many magazines, an abundance of children's tub toys.
• Buy a hanging shoe rack and put on the back of the door. The pockets can hold almost everything needed in the bathroom; hair dryer, curling iron, deodorant, face cream, extra shampoos and conditioners, cosmetics, a few extra bars of soap, toothpaste, face soap, personal products or anything else you need handy in the bathroom.
• In the shower put a shower caddy over the shower head. There is a plethora out there from which to make a selection that works for you. They come in several sizes and styles. This holds shampoo, conditioner, soap, shower gel, wash cloth, face soap, razors and anything else you need to use while in the shower.
• If you have children buy a net that suctions to the tile wall and use this to contain their tub toys. Or keep a plastic container under the sink for the toys.
• If there are no drawers and limited counter space keep only the essentials on the counter so the bathroom doesn't look cluttered and gives the impression of being larger. Use baskets to keep cosmetics that are used daily on the counter. A basket can be divided up by using small containers such as mugs or glasses to separate what is kept in them. Another basket could be used for shaving cream, razor, after shave or cologne. Electric toothbrushes can be placed in the basket.
• Over the toilet shelves can be installed for hand towels and extra soap which are kept in an attractive basket. Or there are free standing shelves that can be placed over the toilet. They are universal so will fit almost any bathroom. If you are unsure, measure your space before buying one. Some have open shelves and other have open shelves combined with doors. Many have a towel rack to hang hand towels.
• A basket can be placed on top of the toilet to keep sundry items such as rolled up wash cloths, hand towels, a few rolls of toilet paper, or bars of soap.
• This is not the room to use those little cutesy soaps that are dust catchers and add to clutter. There is not enough room in an itty bitty bathroom.
• Under the sink can be used more effectively by adding a shelf. There are plastic or metal ones of various sizes to choose from. This gives more storage space for extra shampoos, soap, razors, bubble bath, cotton balls which are kept in glass jars or other containers, candles which are also stored in baskets or some other kind of container. If there are children in the home use child locks on the doors if needed.
• A free standing hat rack can be used for bath towels. Or hooks on the wall or on the back of the door can hold towels.
• Cabinets (traditionally called medicine cabinets) over the sink can hold various items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, cologne, deodorant and can be organized on the shelves by height or type.
• Adding a mirror on walls can make the room appear larger. Either a full length mirror on one wall or a mirror on the opposite side of the mirror over the sink.
Whatever way you chose to organize your tiny bathroom, make it work for you. Evaluate what really needs to be kept in the room and take out the things that aren't used on a regularly basis and store someplace else.
